We had our home built in 2000. We have a submersible well pump, but I don’t have any info about the pump size, model, etc., and the builder is long gone. I’m not having any problems at the moment, but 18 years is longer lasting than any pump I ever had, and I want to be prepared for its replacement.

I need some help with pump size. What I know:
- On the pump cap: “Well depth 167, pumping level 100” (Would this mean the well is hanging at 100’?)
- 1” water line runs across a level yard 50 feet from well cap to inside the house.

Inside the house:
- Water line goes through a check valve and then into the tank tee. (From what I’ve been reading, I really only need a check valve down at the pump).
- 30/50 pressure switch
- 230v pump (3 total wires, red black green)
- Amtrol WX-202 20g tank
- 3 bedroom/2 baths
- 12 total fixtures: 2 bath (6), kitchen sink/dw (2), washer, utility sink, 2 hose bibs
- 2 people live here at the moment, but the house could handle 4 people easily.

I don't have any info about what the well is capable of producing.

I’m trying to get an idea what Goulds pump I'd need. Is there enough info here to determine GPM and HP?

I am also kicking around the idea of pulling out the pump and seeing what I actually have.

Thanks!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have a pump still working after 36 years. It will quit you someday, but it will probably work fine right up to the last minute. Since it has lasted so long, you should go back with the same size pump. 100' pumping level means your pump must be set deeper than that. It can be set at 160', but is still only pumping from the 100' pumping level as far as the pump is concerned. If you have a control box on the wall it will give you the horsepower. If you do not have a control box that limits the pump to less than 1.5HP. Reading how many amps it draws would also tell you the horsepower. 1/2HP is 5 amps, 3/4HP is 7, and 1HP is 9 amps.

36 years??? Holy smokes!! No control box. That's awesome to know about reading the amps, I'll have to dig out my meter and see what it says.

Regarding pumping level 100 - would this be the top of the water table or something?

Actually they don't make pumps as good as in the past. So you want to hang on to that good pump as long as possible. 30 years is not uncommon as long as the pump doesn't cycle on and off too much. If the pumping level is 100', I would guess the water table is higher than that. Water level in a well usually draws down from the static level or top of the water table to the pumping level when you use water. I would guess your static level is 80' or so.

Yeah 18 years for a submersible is middle aged. My parents pulled ours to replace check valve back in 93 and I service it now. Couldn’t tell you the age. They bought the house under foreclosure. 3 wire is longer lasting. You can replace most the electrical parts that go bad. But even a 2 wire should last 30 years. This age is considering your not picking up trash all the time and you have a perfect well to suspend up off bottom and never run out. But that’s in Tennessee.
