I have a three-bolt tank for an unknown toilet. The bolts were badly rusted and one was leaking. I'd like to replace the gasket and bolts and keep using the toilet, if possible.
I'd like to know:
1. What is the material still around the pipe on the bottom of the tank? After removing the gasket and cleaning the area with a wire brush, it doesn't seem to be gasket material. Is that a disintegrated nut or some kind of attachment?
2. Does that material need to be removed before I put on a new gasket, or it actually holding the flush valve on?
3. What kind of gasket do I need? I measure 2-1/4" as the inside diameter of the flush valve (from the bottom)?
I don't know what kind of toilet this is. I see a stamp with a 1957 date in it-- the year this house in San Diego was built. It could be a Western Pottery, but maybe not. I'm also not sure if the tank matches the toilet, since when I took it apart, I noticed the tank was leaning way back against the wall. Maybe that was due to to the disintegration of the gasket, though.
I'd appreciate any help you could give me.
