Hi!
When we purchased our house it already had a bathroom rough-in in the basement. Two pipes are sticking out and one with only top of the cap visible (please see the image, I broke some concrete around it). Ideally I would like to install a 3-piece bathroom there. The blue capped pipe measures 3", the orange capped pipe that's sticking 2" and the pipe submerged in the concrete is 2".

Here are some things I'm trying to figure out:
  • Which diameter pipe is better suited for the shower and which one is for the vanity? (1.5" vs 2")?

  • How can I connect to the pipe that is under the concrete?
    • Do I just break enough concrete and use a coupler to extend the pipe so that I can work with it?

    • Will it be safe to pour the concrete over the coupler to refill the hole?
  • As someone who is just learning to do these things, any important things I should keep in mind?
Any advice is highly appreciated, thank you!

3" for toilet rough in, 2" for shower and 1,1/2" for vanity. When it comes to underground connections either, no hub, pending what code regulates. Or a coupling. And as long as you are using schedule 40 pvc in concrete will be fine. Anything else, it's iffy. And as a newbie, know the code, do it per code. And the Biggie, make sure you don't have to tear the floor out again to redo any of the plumbing. Don't make the mistake of having to redo any of the the plumbing after you have already installed a bathroom. That's the Biggie with me.

Hire someone with a line camera and locator.
Look to see what's there and where does it go.
does the 2 " have a p-trap below it?
No vent for 3" if that is a toilet

Looks like the vent for the shower is out in the shower area, also you might have to break up the floor and move the 2" line
into the wall and then reduce it down to 1 1/2" and then vent it. Looking at the toilet line in the picture it seems that maybe
the pipe is out to far. Check your measurements. Let us know what you find.

Thank you. I've checked
stick your tape measure down the 1.5 pipe and see if it is a p trap...you can tell by the'' feel'' of the tape
same thing on that 2'' see if it feels like a 90

Thank you. I've checked and 2" feels like 90 and 1.5" feels like a p-trap. Does that mean that I should install the shower at the 1.5" and sink will have its own trap above the concrete where 2" is?

YES

shower, has to have a 2'' trap.
it looks like the trap is in a tub box. dig that out around the pipe,
a tub box is a box out in the concrete, dig it out and see if the trap is 2''' with just a reducer in the top of it
reducing to 1.5''
