Hello!

I need some help identifying this stem from an old bathroom (home built in 1950). The handles appear to be American Standard Renu...and I mistakenly ordered two stems/cartridges for this. Once received, I began replacement and during removal of the existing hardware realized pretty quick I was working with something different. I can't for the life of me figure out what type it is.

Picture of stem pulled directly out. I'm sure the seat is still stuck back in which I will replace also.

Here is the incorrect stem/valve I purchased x2... ouch. I thought it was the American Standard Renu based on the faucet handles, etc.

The stem in the first picture does not look complete. There would normally be a brass outer casing around those guts, with threads on the inside corresponding to the threads on the piece you have. The big nut you did take out would hold the whole thing in place. That is, the complete stem, with retaining nut, would look more like this:

So, the outer casing is probably still in the wall. If you screw the piece you have back in, then pull on the splined part it should come out.

Went by a local plumbing store... it's a Speakman stem. Don't think there's any sort of outer casing. This inserts directly into the manifold in the wall. I do think there is a seat in the back of the manifold (whatever the back piece is called).

Now I just need to figure out how to order the right size... not sure if there are length differences, etc.

if you have a plumbing supply house near you bring the stem and all those pics...they should help you out.....
it might have whats called a seat....that's what the rubber washer sits against the supply house sells seat wrenches you may be able to feel it with your finger if its knicked its no good they also make a tool that takes the burrs off the seat but i just change them

yes the length makes a difference...don't buy off brand replacement parts they may look the same but aren't....

what the other poser is talking about i think is called the barrel when you find the part you will know if its still in the valve the barrel threads over the stem

This looks to be identical to what I pulled out. Has the packing, washer, and stem. I posted a picture above looking directly into the manifold - I can't easily tell if there is a barrel in there from the picture. I'll check tomorrow if I can feel anything. Thanks so far for your help everyone!
