WILL YOU PLEASE STOP THAT!?!

...Damn... I think I soiled myself...

Sorry everyone. Didn't mean for this to get so far off topic. To bring it back, I wanted to let you know that I am leaning towards a tank now, but haven't ruled out tankless. I had a plumber stop by and he said that he recommended a tank to be vented out our chimney. The chimney would need to be lined. He said that a tank vented out a chimney would have the same functionality as a direct vent (they are just vented differently). I thought that the chimney vent (atmostpheric vent) tank was cheaper because it wasn't as good. Is it true that the only difference is how they are vented.

I might go with a 75 gallon chimney/atmospheric vent tank, but also didn't want to rule out the tankless. I am still for the tankless because it will give us basically unlimited hot water. My wife is concerned that she won't be able to fill the tub with water at the end of the day. Would a 75 gallon tank for us (a family of four) be sufficient? Are there "good" tanks out there that are well insulated and can refill rather quickly?

IMHO, a 74 gallon tank for a family of 4 is about double the overkill needed. I also know that once a tank gets over 50 gallons, the price increases dramatically.

From Home Depot:

2 or fewer people - 23 to 36 gallon
2 to 4 people - 36 to 46 gallons
3 to 5 people - 46 to 56 gallons
5 or more people - 56 or more gallons

Rheem Performance 50 Gal. Tall 6 Year 36,000 BTU High Efficiency Ultra Low NOx Natural Gas Water Heater
Model# XG50T06HN36U0
$679.00

Westinghouse 80 Gal. 10 Year 76,000 BTU Natural Gas Water Heater
Model# WGR080NG076
$3,058.07

Seems like the 80 gallon has double the power and a four year longer warranty? Is that a fair comparison?

Correct.

Did he give you a price for the liner(s)? This ain't cheap and you need to be aware of the modifications/cost. Does his company do the liner or does he sub-contract that portion to a chimney specialist or HVAC man?

The cost of either vent system must be realized.

I am sitting here scratching my head as to why you do not remove the old w/h and go back with a 50 gallon that vents out the same flue that was there.

oh well, its your house, good luck it has been a pleasure

Maybe more efficiency and safety... performance concerns?

What I don't understand is why he has not been able to find a reputable and certified contractor that can explain thoroughly and honestly all of the options...

Not following you really...I don't see prices that high. Bradford White is close to top of the line? This is listed at about $2200. Is it a viable option?

Hello...We are working with a contractor that I do not have direct contact with (our architect does). She said that the plumber is good, but cannot make recommendations on what system to install. Most likely a language issue. So, I am trying to get plumbers out to have a look and give a free estimate so I can get an idea of what is the best system to install for us and whether a tankless is even a viable option.

You have to have direct contact with the Plumbing Contractor.

Why would you expect free estimates if you cannot buy directly from the plumbing contractors...

If I go with direct (atmospheric vent) 75gallon...what model would you recommend? Are there ones that recover a lot faster and could provide hot water faster than others?
