Why Two Drains?

My Son-Inlaw called me over as he was replacing a two bowl sink with a garbage disposal to a Single Bowl Sink with a disposal and had a question.

Attached is a picture of the plumbing.

The lower pipe received waste from the two sink bowls, the other higher and to the right received waste from the dishwasher.

To the left is the waste pipe and vent.

Any thoughts why two drains, one higher than the other?

When the dishwasher drains, theres a good chance it would siphon the p-traps of the sinks dry if they were connected that closely. Giving the dishwasher is seperate drain and higher on the stack will help it vent. If the dishwasher was on the bottom, if you drained the sink while the dishwasher was draining you will choke off its vent and could have drainage issues.

In my opinion, two drains is best as long as the are not joined on one pipe because in that way the water and waste that are filtered on it won't get stuck...
