My kitchen has a single bowl sink with a garbage disposal and dishwasher attached. The dishwasher hose is routed high but there is no air gap installed. When I dump a lot of water into the sink, big bucket or pot for example, there is a lot of gurgling while water fills the garbage disposal chamber. Sink is deep but narrow, 15x17 inside dimension, so this happens frequently. Any idea if an air gap installed on the dishwasher hose would prevent that?

no, an air gap installed in the dishwasher hose will yeild large amounts of water in your cabinet since it has a high discharge pump and is not designed to be installed with an air gap, the gurgleing may have a remedy but i'd doubt air gapping would be the solution. others may have an insightfull idea that may help, I assume the fixture is properly vented?

Oh ok, thanks. I'm talking about one of those pieces that attaches at top of sink next to faucet and has a dishwasher inlet hose attachment and then hose outlet attachment for sink. I thought they were designed for dishwashers but I guess you have a point if the discharge is too high it wouldn't work. The fixture is vented, sink is under a window but about two feet across is a vent to roof. There's no gurgling after it seems to fill up the disposal, a few seconds I guess. And when I say that I guess it doesn't seem like that big a deal, it may be normal and just something to live with.

These are supposed to be for backflow protection but I had thought it could fix this gurgle problem since the air trapped in disposal could escape through that instead of through the sink drain, causing the gurgle.

The purpose of the fitting in your link is to prevent the sink drain from backing up into the dishwasher and contaminating your dishes with waste water. It will do nothing for the sink drain.
