Moen1225 Replacement

I am trying to replace a Moen 1225 Single lever Bathroom sink faucet. After getting the old one out and trying to replace with a new one, I followed Moen's Directions:
"Under the sink, slowly and carefully (only turn the water on slightly) turn the hot water shutoff on and back off to allow a slight flow of water to go through the system. Repeat the same process for the cold water."
I did this and now both shutoff valves (Hot & cold) drip. I shut off the water main to the house and of course no more dripping. What do I do next?
Any help is appreciated. My Dearly departed younger brother was a licensed plumber in N.J. and I can hear him laughing at me now.

Make sure the valves are completely open. If there’s a packing nut on the valve you could try to tighten.

Do I do this with the water turned off?, or should I open the Main? The faucet was filling up very slowly and dripping until I turned the main off and as you can see now the water has drained out of it. After letting it dry completely should I try to replace the cartridge?

Put the faucet back together and turn the valves underneath all the way open.

Thank you again. The main valve to the house is still off; Should I wait to turn it before or after I install the cartridge? OK, I turned on the main and the pipe where the cartridge goes filled with water again, and the valves under the sink started dripping again.They never leaked before.

Go ahead and install it.

No Can Do. Cartridge Sticks up abut an 1/4 inch or less and I can't get the retaining clip on it.

Then you have the wrong cartridge or there’s something still left in the faucet from the old cartridge.

I know, I think you're right.That's why Moen Recommended the flush. Been in there and scrubbed with a toothbrush And put various size screwdrivers and best I can see there doesn't appear there anything in there but I'm obviously wrong. The cartridge is the same exact size that I pulled out.

Open the cartridge before you install it. Just pull the stem straight out.

The only thing thats changed is the shutoff valves under the sink drip and they didn't before I tried the flush.

Thanks again , I did that. I also used some silicone grease (very little) on it.

Use a flashlight to look inside the faucet body. Make sure nothings in there blocking the cartridge.

Always use Moen factory parts the best chance for proper fit and function.

If it still doesn’t fit, I have no answers for you.

Look at your new cartridge. Do you see the black rubber pieces on both side of it. Now look at your old cartridge that you pulled
out and see if the rubber is on both sides of it. If they are both there then your not pushing the cartridge in far enough.

+1 on this advice. compare all the black rubber pieces on your new cartridge to the one you removed. If anything is missing on the old cartridge chances are it is in the faucet body. This has happened to me twice while replacing Moen 1225 cartridges. You should use a genuine Moen cartridge. If you have difficulty finding one, call Moen, they will send you a new one for free.

Never got it to fit. Want to thank you again. Finally got hold of local plumber and decided to replace the whole faucet [Delta].
