Hi,

We just moved into a house that was built around 5y ago. There's a bathroom downstairs that wasn't really used. I just noticed that after a few uses (<5 tops) the floors look discolored. The floor pictured below is completely dry. It has not been used in a few days. I tried cleaning it with Clorox bathroom cleaner and a brush but it didn't have an impact. I checked my walkthrough video of the house and saw that the floor was completely light and not discolored a few months ago.

Anyone know what could be going on here?

Thanks!

It may have backed up and the owner poured drain cleaner in the shower.

I guess we can agree that someone did something wrong in the past and this is the result. What do you plan on doing to clean this up? Do you just want it to look better? Do you want to rip it out and start over? Is it glazed tile? What is under this tile?

IMHO, adding just another topping will just compound the issue. You need to test a small area with a diluted muriatic acid to see if the dark spots lighten up. Also, try a bleach solution on another piece, to see it that works. If it is not glazed, I would try a light sanding, again to see if this has any affect of the dark area.

Do the dark areas feel damp? If not, you could try a product called 'enhance and seal'. It might restore the color.
I have the impression that a surface treatment was used to clean up the shower before the house was sold, but that the problem is lack of integrity in the liner or shower pan. But it's worth a try first.
