Has anyone used megapress to repair old galvanized pipe? I have a property with a new building and an old one. I had a leak in what I'll call the new main but when going to replace it, we uncovered the old main and caused it to leak. I think the old main goes under the new building and is connected to the old building. When they build the new building, they built on top of it and connected the new main to both buildings. I'm hoping to use a megapress cap to cap off the old main but I'm worried about the rust and crud making a good seal. If that won't work, what other options are there?

have only heard of using it on steel and stainless steel i think even if you were able to press galvi your piping is to fragile there are special fittings used on water mains, i forget the manufacturer, ford maybe, but when i used it it slid over the brass,it had a rubber ferrel the brass part of the coupling had teeth that once you tightened the brass nuts

They advertise for carbon steel but the guy who brought it to my attention assured me it will work on galvanized. But he works with new construction and I had the same thought as you, that the galvanized pipe would crack, especially since it's rusty and old. But I don't need to connect to the meter. That part has already been taken care of. Luckily it was fixed before and it was PVC connected to the meter and somewhere it changed to galvanized. Where I had a problem is the old main was disconnected from the meter and capped and in the process of digging to connect the new line, it was cracked. Megapress sounded too good to be true I think.

You can mega press galvanized. They have a manual online that gives you an example of how rusty the pipe can be and still be pressed. Definitely a life saver in sticky situations.

You can use megapress on galvanized piping but you need to use the special stainless steel megapress fittings. The fittings with the green stickers are designed for hydronic heating systems only and will rust out over time if used on a potable water system. Nobody ever carries the stainless steel ones, they are special order and quite expensive. I would either heat up the joints until their cherry red and try to unscrew the piping or just stick with regular old dresser couplings!
