Can't imagine how this would happen but I have basement toilet (feeds to a grinder pump) that has started draining slowly and most of the time does not completely flush on the first time.

There is a bar sink and dishwasher feeding the same pump and neither have drainage problems.

The water level rises and (by my interpretation) seems to drain slowly - not sure how that is regulated.

Tried plunging numerous times but it does not help or make better.

Any suggestions?

Is the flush tank filling correctly? A low volume of water in the toilet tank, will cause the problem you are describing.

My guess is you have a slow leak in the flapper valve, and if it sits for a while it bleeds down, resulting in a low water volume in the toilet tank, which is too low to actually flush, and when you flush the second time you are getting a full volume flush, and it works.

Also an improperly set flapper valve can cause the same issue by closing too soon.

There is probably a partial clog in the drain line.
That can cause slow flushing, and can cause the water in the bowl to be slowly sucked almost dry.

You can take a wire coat hanger, cut it open and use the stiff wire end as a reaming tool.

Usually giving the wire end a slight curve will help it slip into the clogged rim jets.

Poke through the crusty holes one at a time, and twist the wire around to break up some of the mineral build up.

Did as instructed and it did not help. (Jets were not significantly clogged)

So if I dump a 3-gallon bucket down, it works (flushes) correctly. But, if I do a normal flush (including holding the handle down and letting the tank drain) it does not (only half drains)!?

What am I missing??

I still think your toilet drain is probably half clogged.

Go buy a toilet auger and use it to clear the toilet trap and first few feet of the drain.
You can get a toilet auger that will go in six feet.

Or pull the toilet and snake the drain all the way to the sewage pump pit.

Or snake the drain from the pit all the way to the toilet, so you don’t have to pull the toilet.
Just don’t go into the toilet, you can take care of that end with the toilet auger.

I think you need a need toilet. If it flushes with the bucket of water its probably not plugged. The toilet must have
lime buildup and not letting the water from the tank to the bowl work correctly. Just my opinion.

Got auger 6' version - augered (or whatever you'd call it :O)) all the way down and no help.

Same problem - leaning towards just replacing...

Tom - you beat me to it! Next step is to just replace the old one.

sometimes the holes up under the rim become clogged with residue.
