Hi all,

Trying to figure out this odd occurrence with our kitchen sink recently. So not all the time, but maybe 10% of the time we do a load of laundry, our kitchen sink will gurgle, sometimes with water coming up, while our washing machine runs. The water goes back down immediately and never rises more than an inch or two. However, the water smells sewagey. Any idea what could be the issue? I've seen online suggestions of perhaps a venting issue near the sink, a clog in the washing machine's drain line, and others. Willing to try all reasonable fixes before having to pay big money for a plumber.

Thanks.

Based on your statement, "The water goes back down immediately and never rises more than an inch or two.", I have to add...

It's also possible that if you have an AAV(air admittance valve), in lieu of a piped vent to atmosphere, that the high discharge flow from a washing machine(particularly if it's one of those newer high volume machines) is preventing the AAV from opening.
