I live in a cottage on a large property in California. The cottage is currently connected to a septic tank that is failing (cracked and full of roots). I would like to change the drain waste line to use a septic tank on another corner of the property that has plenty of capacity and downhill from my location.

My question is this. Will it work to run a 400' line to the tank? I have at least the 1/4" per foot slope that is normally required, but am unsure if it will work at this distance. I would like to run 3" pipe, but could probably go to 4" if necessary. Should clean-outs be installed and, if so, how far apart?
