I started out building a shower pan in the traditional method (plastic liner), but, bailed after having difficulties with the shower curb. I have built the first layer of mortar that goes under the liner, but, have decided that I want to go with a Kerdi based system instead. This allowed me to use backerboard to build the curb which was much easier.
Now I am contemplating the next step. I think I want to just put another layer of mortar and embed the Kerdi Drain into it. Then I will finish the whole thing with Kerdi membrane and tile.
My question is, can I just put another layer of mortar on top of the existing mortar or should I break it up and remove it back down to the plywood? If I put another layer on top, do I need to so something to bond it to the lower level or can I just put more on top?
