We have a 55 year old redwood tank that was just pumped. The company said the tank still looks good. My question is: should the tank be filled with water immediately following the pump?
A few notes:

Tank is 1,000 gallon redwood tank built in 1959
Just my wife and I and we use about 60 gallons of water a day
Surrounding soil is sandstone and fill dirt.

My concerns are
1) empty tank + surrounding soil pressure = stress on tank walls
2) redwood boards drying up causing warpage which may lead to leaks.

with our water usage it would take over 2 weeks to fill up the tank.

Please help!

Personally I would fill it. You don't want that wood shrinking at all and falling apart. In reality it probably wont but I like to play on the safe side.

Things to consider if you decide to fill it.

If you pay for water, it could be a nasty jump on your water bill, that's a lot of water in one shot. Not sure what your rates are like, but here in Halifax I guess we're high.

If you're on a well system you will not fill it in one shot. You will certainly run the well dry and possibly damage your pump. Do it over the period of a few days, running water for 15-20 mins at a time. If doing it thru a garden hose, do it at 1/2 throttle.

Really depends where you are, in Oregon i have never had a problem filling customers tanks from a well.
