I have a sink drain that has four holes inside the pipe. Or perhaps circular depressions would be more accurate. They're about half an inch below the top of the drain. Evenly spaced around the pipe. Each depression is about half an inch in diameter. Two of them seem to be dead ends, about a quarter inch deep. The other two have openings that let you poke around behind the pipe.

See attached photo.

What are these holes for?

Thanks. Follow-up question: These holes were partially or completely filled with putty, or caulk, or just 6 years of accumulated gunk. I'm guessing these holes should NOT be blocked, right? Or are some plumbers filling them during installation for some reason?

Most sinks have overflow holes high up on the rim, so if the sink drain was stopped with water running, these holes would begin draining water as the level reaches the overflow vents. If your sink doesn't have these overflow holes, then just ignore the small holes seen. If you do have the holes in the sink, you could always test them by stopping the drain and allowing water to fill up until it reaches the vents.
