what do I need to buy to fix this and how to replace

You will need a new stem to replace the broken one. Turn off your water, remove the broken stem and bring it in to your local plumbing supply store to match up by sight. While you are at it maybe get new handles too. Bring the new stem home and install it.
Post a picture of the faucet with the trim and someone may be able to identify it for you.
