Copper pipes for kitchen sink

Hello All,

I'm wondering if it is safe to cut about 4-6" off the top of the copper for the hot and cold water pipes for the sink. They are going to be housed in a cabinet, but I would like to try and fit a drawer in the top and wasn't sure if all that pipe a the top was needed, or what the reason for it was.

Looks like home built water hammer arrestors. They make smaller ones that you could easily replace with.
 
Thanks Havasu! I'll go check out Home Depot to see what they have available in the way of hammer arrestors.
 
You may not even need the arrestors.
Could be someone just installed them as a precaution and not a solution.
Cut them down. you can always lower the tee and stop valves if you want to keep the length of arrestors.

The arrestors just hold air and act like a shock absorber if you do have something in the system causing water hammer
 
Back in the day, we would put them on all quick closing valves.
