I just bought a house with both city water and well water. Intermittently, the well water is yellow, sometimes with bits of black particles in it, and smells like a swamp. Sometimes, it's crystal-clear and tastes good. (I haven't dared to taste it when it's yellow!). It might be worth noting that the house sat vacant for a year before I bought it. What's going on? Thanks.

I can't vouch for the quality of your well water because there are good wells and there are bad wells. Usually the shallow wells are the bad ones. As far as safety goes. Not necessarily water quality.

Yellow is normally iron and black is usually sulphur. Neither are harmful to you. They aren't aesthetically pretty though. There are filters that will take care of most of that, but sometimes simply running the water full blast for a while will clear it up and the color will diminish.
