Good Morning,

We have a new issue with our house. When we flush the toilet, the shower makes a clunking noise. With a bit of research it sound like our vent pipe could be clogged. We had about 30 inches of snow last week, the same day this started. Is it possible that snow in our vent pipe is clogging this? If so, is it harmful for this to be happening while we wait for it to melt? Or should we get someone up on the roof? If not, what else could be causing this?

Thanks so much for your help!

You are probably right, If snow has blocked the vent pipe then a vacuum is being caused. when you flush the toilet you are releasing a large amount of water through a large pipe. this causes a back suction effect which will cause the water in the traps on sinks and showers if connected to the same pipe to be pulled with them. That's why a soil pipe has a vent. It's not a problem as long as the snow melts away, if you notice the any drainage smells coming up through the shower waste just make sure that you put water down the shower to top up the water in the trap after you flush the toilet.
