Hello all, I have a very old (approx 80 years, and converted to natural gas) boiler that still works quite well, so am not ready to replace it yet. However I am starting a basement renovation and would like to move a couple of the main water lines (1 zone) up into the floor joists so that I can remove an existing bulkhead that runs through the middle of the basement.

My question is, can I (I meaning a prof contractor) replace the old pipe (looks to be 3 inch cast iron) with the oxygen barrier PEX? High temp of boiler water (not steam) is under 200F so temp should not be an issue, nor should pressure. Also, half of the radiators have been removed previously from this one zone, so am also wondering, if the PEX can be used, how do I calculate the now required pipe size required for this zone?

Thanks for any help

Unless you plan to remove ALL the 3" pipe, you might not want to do it, because you will not find ANY PEX large enough to supply the system. I assume it has a circulation pump, although systems with that size pipe and age did not have one originally.
