Hello,

Today I discovered several dark green spots on my basement floor. I looked up and saw a dark green spongy growth around my copper pipe. It was very soft and came off easily. I have no idea what it is or why it developed. Almost seems like mold or algae.

I attached before and after pics.

Any one know what this is, why it developed and if it is harmful to the pipe?

Thank you in advance!

If that is a DWV copper drain line and coming from the kitchen, that was last weeks dinner.

The copper pipe is leaking organic goo.

Usually the bottom of copper drains rot out first when they are slightly back graded and the organic waste sits in pipe. A lot of food waste is acidic. Oily and fatty waste will cling to the top and sides and coat the inside with a sludge.

Thanks Mr_David, looks like I'll be replacing that pipe!
