We are looking at a house and made a offer. Had a inspection and on the water had the simple test done what ever that is. Test came back with coliform bacteria presnt. What is involved in treating it and the price? The house has been empty for a yr owner is a older lady and moved in with her daughter. thank
 
I would run the water for a couple of hours after turning on the water heater, then take another sample. If your on city water, it's probably just from sitting so long. If on a well, get all the info you can. If it's a real shallow well, hand dug well or a very old well that could possibly have holes in the casing letting in surface water, the coliform bacteria may be there to stay.

Coliform bacteria is generally from animal feces. So if your near a farm, have animals in the yard near the well, that could be the source, but not the cause.
 
Thanks the well is under the back deck right at the house. No farm and has a car body shop(maybe 2 yrs) in front a ways but was something else yrs ago. The lady moved out about a yr ago to live with her kids(70). The house was built in 1979-80. We backed out of the house and found something else
