Compared to having the c.o below the trap arm.

And I'm betting if they're that old, they probably don't even work anymore. It definitely doesn't hurt to have them in your home but you could put them anywhere that's accessible for you

Sometimes sludge builds up in the traps. If its not accessible you could use an enzyme. That'll usually help eat away at some of the sludge. I know that I've saw plenty of p traps underground up here...
