If the spool is moving when you shake it I would try reinstalling it. Don't over tighten it the O ring prevents it from leaking not the threads.

The only one I have ever seen was on a flush ell toilet. Tanks are screwed to wall and connected to the bowl with a 2" flush ell.

Matt I think we are talking about two different pumps. I was referring to a submersible pump. Not a jet pump.

Then It,s part of the pump. You can put one on the line feeding the tank but there is a possibility that you may get a hammer when the pump turns off. But it's worth a try.
