Dave speaks the truth. Just don't use pliers or you will gouge the crap out of it. They also have universal handle pullers available but brute force will save you some $$.

It could have been the walls or even the ceiling before the counters were installed. Heck, it could even be a sloppy paint job but unless we actually see it, there are only a few things it could be.
