Thermal Expansion Tank has hole in metal and is leaking. Water heater appears to have water in it so I am draining it, but there was a ton of water on basement floor. Gas is off. Water is off and hot valve in laundry is open.

IT appears to be white pipe dope liquid around watts tank neck and brass hex and I have tried to get it off with wrench. I am female and not strong but I do not want to break pipe.

Why would the expansion tank leak water? I don't want to replace water heater if only the tank is bad. Plumbers seem to be rip off artists these days. I have been quoted $250 for a $35 expansion tank replacement.

Do you have any neighbors who could come over and help you? My neighbors always come over for some help, and I don't mind at all. We all take care of each other, the way it should be!

Use two wrench, one on the pipe fittting and the other on the tank fitting.
apply presssure in opposing direction. The bigger the wrench the more leverage.
