Default Remove tub drain flange

I have a bathtub drain that is the push-down/push-up variety. The stopper is broken in a way that where it threads into the bottom of the flange - that X (cross piece) is gone. I need a way to remove this old flange. I can't figure out how to get a grip on it. Suggestions? Many thanks.
