Default Old Gerber valve

I went to look at a leak this evening.

When I got there, I found a rather old 2 handle Gerber shower valve leaking aroung the handle, and supposedly, also leaking inside the wall down into the laundromat below. There was no way to shut off the individual room with the bad valve, so I would have had to shut off the laundromat and all of the other rooms to pull the valve apart, so no way for me to pull the cartridge to see what would be needed.

The owner doesn't want to spring for a new valve, so I am trying to find out what would be involved in rebuilding this one.

Did Gerber have a lot of different valves, or were they pretty much the same?

Obligatory picture of the handle:

I may even have a stem on my truck for that.
No work today And I just got a call from the office telling me to sleep in.

I hate customers that want miracles but don't want to spend the money.

I just looked in a PartsMaster stem book and there are 15 different stems.

Not what I wanted to hear, but thanks.

Here's hoping that they wake you up with 10 hours worth of work tomorrow.

Cat # 05079P or Ref #96-717

Thanks for the part numbers. I will see if I can lay my hands on a set of stems and seats. Do the stems usually give trouble coming out?

Just make sure you open the valve before you remove the stem. I've seen a few people drive the stem through the back of the valve like a screw jack and destroy a faucet or two.

Phishfood, The stems are all the same but they make different trim for the same shower valve. Here is a PDF file that has the stems. (first link) And if you look at Kisslers trim and stem kit you will see the different types of trim they have for the same valve. (second link)

Success!

The stem is replaced, doesn't leak, and the customer is happy.
