Default replacing sink drain

HI, i am wondering if this drain was all one piece and rusted through or was 2 pieces? appreciate any help! this is my first drain replacement

It was two pieces. The section on the left screwed into the one on the right. That doesn't mean that the new one has to be the same. There are many different types. And all will fit a standard lav drain.
