Looking for advice on shower components
Hi guys,
This is my first post. I'm looking for some help selecting quality components for a shower renovation. I'm fixing up the shower to sell the house (the 40 year old original tile was leaking, and the old original Kohler valve was not doing to well either) and I want to do a quality job for the next owners, but there's no point in worrying a lot about extended service after the sale because I'm sure nobody- including local plumbing suppliers- will honor a warranty if they are not the original owners. I don't have access to a contractor account or the accompanying discounts at the local plumber supply houses, so I'd have to pay retail there.
So, I'm willing to buy from just anyone (internet or local) but I don't mind paying the extra money for quality- I'm just sick of paying for something I'm not getting, if you understand what I'm trying to say.
My background is in (mechanical & electrical) engineering and I'm decent at metalworking (I have a mill, lathe, MIG, TIG & stick welders, oxy/acetylene, etc. in my garage) so I don't feel too intimidated by plumbing, but buying the wrong components would be easy to do for a beginner. I'll be working with copper, and I had no trouble soldering the copper compressed air lines in my garage.
Moving on to my question, I know there are many good answers to a question like this, no "one best" answer, so what are the good ones? What ones are notorious for giving people trouble?
That said, I like the idea of a pressure balancing valve if one can be had for a reasonable price. This is a shower only, no bathtub, so do I need to find a shower only valve, or do I just use a cap or plug on the shower outlet on a valve? Should I avoid the kits with the valve, faucet, etc?
Is there any other advice you can pass on to a beginner?
