Default Need help before taking off bathtub drain pipe

My bathtub drain was totally blocked.

We bought this property two month ago and the bathtub drain was slow at that time (overlooked at the inspection).

A plumber tried to use a snake but had no luck. He said he had to go under the house and take the drain pipes off to clean it. He also said I can just use it before the drain is totally blocked.

I had tried a plumber and the plumber made the drain totally blocked now.

I had taken pictures of the drain pipes under the house and would like to ask for some advice before I take anything off.

Other information:

1. Nearby drains are good. So, I think the main line is OK.
2. Judging by the length the snakes (the plumber's snake and my hand snake) can go into, I think the snakes had not passed the U shape connection (the P trap?).
3. I had tried shop-vec but no luck. However, Judging by the vacuum etc., I do not think the blockage starts behind the joint of the vent.
4. The house was build in 1955 and in Santa Clara, CA. The previous owner remodeled the bathroom.

The photos:

1. The PVC pipe from the bathtub joins the drain pipe (cast iron?)
2. The drain pipe joining the main line (the picture is taken at an angle)

My plan is to take the U shape connector or the short pipes off and run a snake from there. Are pipe wrenches enough for this task? Any thing I should know before starting? I notice some little leak there buy did not figure out what's wrong with the PVC pipes.

There should be no need to take the trap off. Just snake the line through the overflow on the tub with a small power snake.

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply.

The plumber had tried his power snake and I had tried my hand snake in the following link:

Shop Cobra 1/4" x 15' Plastic Drum Auger at Lowes.com

Do you think I need a thinner snake or my snake's head is too big to pass the P-trap ?

Do you think the U shape connector is still good (not rusted too much)?

Regards,
Jack

I don't think you could get enough pressure on that hand snake to get to to pass through the trap. A power snake of the same size should do it.

I ran the snake again and it went through tonight. Thanks a lot John.

Do you think I should put some liquid as well?

Good job. Don't use drain cleaners.
