Default toilet flange not level causing leak

When replacing my toilet I observed that the metal flange is rusted and half of it is flush with the floor and the other half to approx 1/4 inch below floor surface. I installed a jumbo wax ring but the new toilet also leaked where the flange is below floor surface. Should I tear out the old flange and install a new flange with the pvc extender attached. Pelase any help is appreciated. The floor is wood with vinyl.

If the floor is rotted out you should definately replace the floor and at the very least replace the flange. Oatey makes a good replacement as does Sioux Chief. That fit into the old pipe. Ive used these both several times and have had good success.

Also you should make sure your toilet does not have a crack in it. No Pun intended!

As you said, the flange is below floor surface. I think it make the toilet lake since there is not a good connection between the toilet and the flange. You should adjust the toilet flange height. Try to use a toilet flange extender. It gives additional height to the closet flange.
