Push button to traditional lever for toilet tank

I've had a toilet with a push button flush lever mounted on the side of the tank...have hated it since I got the toilet. Never felt solid and over the years has had issues with sticking in the "in" position...it gets gunky and that causes the sticking, though now the pitting of the chrome is causing it to stick.

I really want to install a traditional lever onto the toilet in place of the push button...people at the Home Depot say it's not possible because the hole in the side of the tank is bigger on tanks made for push button levers. I know from experience that half the time workers at the Home Depot are right, half the time they are wrong.

Does anyone know if it is possible to replace a side mounted push button toilet lever with a traditional handle style toilet lever, and if so, whether I need to get a special part that is specifically for going from a push button to a handle type?

If there is a hole in side of tank, just use your imagination.
I often replace lever handles that, because the hole in tank is larger then the square shank of the handle and the when nut comes loose the handle turns in the hole and messes up the chain length adjustment. (That was a mouth full)
I made a video on fixing this problem. Just modify the hole if it's to big to accommodate the standard handle.
