I will be installing a new garburator (garbage disposal) where one currently does not exist. I have double sinks and a dishwasher. Currently the dishwasher drain is connected to the drain midway between the two sinks. My question is whether I need to move the dishwasher drain thru the garburator or can it stay where it is?
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada if that matters.
I don't see any reason that you can't leave the drain in it's current place. But, depending on your piping arrangement, it might be easier and cheaper to attach it to the disposal.
I would hook up to the garburater, you will probably have to remove the old pipe's anyway to install it. Also I would be leary of solids blocking the DW line over time. I think that attaching to the garburater acts like a flushing sytem for it as well clearing any debris from the unit.

First part of statement is probably true. What ever is easier for you.
The GD has no effect on clearing the dishwasher line.
It's rainy, I'm bored and I'm just going to nit-pic on your comment

That's not what you implied.
"leary of solids blocking the DW line"
So how does the garburator flush it it being the DW line
