I think CA may be different because when I was getting my contractors license they stressed that you can not pay your field employees with a 1099 unless they had their own license to do that type of work because they would be considered a subcontractor. But heck I could be wrong and I looked a little at the CA state license board but couldn't find any good info one way or the other. If you can do it legally thats great, it saves alot of headache.

This is an IRS form. Maybe you will not be able to it because of state taxes. Still I would ask a good CPA.

I don't think it has anything to do with taxes. CA is just a pain to work in. They want a buck if you want to work.

Ohio and Florida both required licenses to do Plumbing work, and the payment method had nothing to do with it. Arkansas allows some contractors (not Plumbing) to do the 1099 form, but I read an application for a company and realized they were just "stiffing" the government and the employee. All employees had to carry their own insurance so the contractor didn't carry Workmans Comp. or any other liability insurance.

That could be it. I am not a plumber. I have a drilling licence.

We have to have 25 employees or more for comp to be required.

I have it, because I have to for HUD work.

Here in CA I need comp if I have one part time employee that works in my office. Also to do any commercial work I have to have 1 mil in general liabilty and 1 mil in auto. So if I hire one guy for up 30,000 in a year and do any commercial work I have to pay about 13 grand in insurance and thats not including any taxes or unemployment insurance.

in connecticut issuing a 1099 is hard. the person must have his own insurance and hold a plumbing contractor license. their is a list of about twenty requirements to meet. if you are their only source of income they are normally considered employees. be careful if they are proven your employees you will owe workmans comp. unemployment insurance. liability insurance. and state and federal taxes on them. i know people who have gone threw it. one owed 75,000 and the other a tree cutter who 1099 his guys while they used his equipment owed more than 100,000. send me a pm if you want to talk

My boss found a solution to control us, his employees..he has 7 employees and used to find it difficult to control if the staff was charging more to their clients, was using more supplies than they should, or just being not responsible in some way..he discovered this app, SalesVu, that allows you to control all the movements of your business from the iphone/ipad..he gave us an iphone to each of us with the cards reader device and all the data are saved there so whenever we have to charge a client we just select the service provided and the price is unique..every payment we receive is saved and organized by time, employee, payment type..it also gives you the option to create an inventory so as to have a control of what's being spent..for us, the employees, is also good because we know we are being trusted by our boss. The app is free and you can find it at SalesVu Cloud Point-of-Sale and Mobile Payments for iPhone and iPad and at the itunes store

This was a good read. I never started my own business for many of the same things that you mentioned above.
I'm a mechanic, not much of a businessman. I still get paid for my time even if the boss gets stiffed.
I flooded a home once but it was my employers liability not mine.
