You can make damascus from raw steel, chain, chainsaw chain, ball bearings, LOTS of different things. The key is to get the material hot enough and use enough flux to bond everything together or you get delamination. for a knife, that can be a killer...
Btw, there is a great young damascus maker named Dan Seaver in NY that I may try and buy from soon...

That's my point, do you know why that is? I can also get a license for a tank, but not for switchblades? That seems wrong.

Handguns are from the "Wild West" and hard to fight the NRA. Knive handlers don't have such a heavy backing I guess.

Today, I took the wife's Toyota Avalon to the stealership for an oil change, because I had a discount coupon. There were also a few recalls (what's new!) to take care of, so I told them to take their time. 4 hours later he called with bad news. He said I need new rear brakes and worse yet, I have a leaking ball joint/steering shaft/front axle doohicky. Cost just for the doohicky..~$1400! I then said I had an extended warranty and when he checked it out, the warranty expires tomorrow! So I pay $50 deductable, and save $1350. Pretty expensive freaking oil change! Missing an expired warranty...priceless! Since this is the "Official Pointless Thread," I figured this is a good place to put this!
