Default Do I need to disinfect water softener?

My softener has sat idle for a couple of years. Do I need to disinfect it? If so how might I do that?

I don't think it is necessary unless it is so rancid and moldy that cleaning is a must. In this case, I would wash the container out, and add a solution of bleach and water, in about a 100 to 1 ratio, or one ounce of bleach to a gallon of water. Scrub and rince a few times afterwards.

You could add some bleach to your brine tank just before a backwash. That would draw the bleach into the mineral tank during the brine and rinse cycle. If there are any little buggers living in there, a 1/4 cup of bleach aught to do them in.
