Default Sump Pump

Recently had a mishap re:sump pump. The power cord had worked its way into the hole and interfered with the float, stopping it from lifting the turn on lever. Just a word to all to be aware of this.
Is there any type of maintenance needed on sump pumps...? Clean off the float occasionally...? The filter...? Keep small debris out of hole, of course.
The home in question is my girlfriend's. I'd like to know the best backup system re: sump pumps. Another pump waiting at the ready...? I've heard of battery backups, but pump failure is more the concern than power outage.
Thanx for any info. Charlie
